NJAST will hold it's annual meeting during lunch in conjunction with this NJSS meeting.  We will provide an update on technologist licensing in NJ at this meeting.

7/5/06 - Educational Information for NJ Sleep Techs!

To Whom It May Concern:

NJAST is planning an educational symposium for technicians working in the field of sleep medicine.  This program will give technicians a possibility to earn CEC’s approved by the APT.  The new BRPT recertification regulations for RPSGT’s may be achieved either by retaking and passing the exam every five years or accumulating fifty CEC’s every five years.

We would like to obtain some feedback and suggestions from our fellow technicians and responses to the following:

1.       Best meeting time (AM, PM?)________________________

2.       Best day (day of week?)___________________________

3.       Location (north, central, south New Jersey?)______________________

4.       Season/time of year (spring, fall, winter, summer?)

Please provide suggestions for symposium topics of education and discussion.  Here are a few that the board has already proposed:

1.       CPAP titration

2.       Pediatrics (event scoring rules, ETCO2 monitoring, techniques)

3.       Medications and sleep

4.       Artifact recognition and troubleshooting

Please provide your own suggestions in the space provided:

Once the bill is signed by Governor Ehrlich, Maryland will become the third state to independently license polysomnographic technologists!

An unofficial copy of the bill can be viewed at http://mlis.state.md.us/2006rs/bills/hb/hb0957t.pdf

12-24-05

Merry Christmas Everyone!

The Polysomnography Practice Act has been signed into law in New Jersey as P.L.2005, c.244.   New Jersey is the second state in the nation to independently license polysomnographic technologists.  We are grateful to our legislative sponsors, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, Assemblyman Ronald Dancer, Senator Robert Singer, Senator Barbara Buono, and Senator Joseph Vitale as well as the AASM, the APT, and the NJAST members and supporters of this legislation who worked so hard to make this happen.

The time frame for all NJ sleep techs to be licensed is 360 days following the appointment and qualification of the State Board of Polysomnography members.

The Polysomnography Practice Act requires that all trainees, technicians and technologists performing polysomnography be licensed.

  • A polysomnographic trainee will be provisionally licensed for one year and must be directly supervised by a licensed polysomnographic technologist or a licensed physician.

  • A polysomnographic technician will receive a temporary license for a period of one year, which may be renewed for an additional one year period to permit three attempts to pass the RPSGT examination required for licensure as a polysomnographic technologist.   The temporary licensed technician must practice under the supervision of a licensed polysomnographic technologist or a licensed physician in a State licensed or nationally accredited sleep center or laboratory.

  • A polysomnographic technologist who has passed the certification examination administered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and holds a valid RPSGT credential on the effective date of this act will receive a two year license.

The grandfather clause:

  • Technicians who have been practicing polysomnography but who do not hold a valid RPSGT credential on the effective date of this act must apply within six months of the effective date of the act to receive a temporary license to continue to practice as a polysomnographic technician for a period of two years.

  • The applicant will be required to document he/she is presently functioning as a polysomnographic technician, has successfully completed a polysomnographic program of not less than one year, or has successfully completed a minimum of 720 hours of experience as a polysomnographic trainee, or has a minimum of one year of experience as a polysomnographic technician with documented proficiency in polysomnography.

  • An applicant who receives a temporary license under this clause will be required to pass the licensure examination administered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and attain the RPSGT credential during this temporary licensure period in order to be issued a license as a polysomnographic technologist.

The State Board of Polysomnography will include 11 members appointed by the Governor:

  • Six board members who must be residents of NJ, actively working as polysomnographic technologists for at least the past five years, and have held the RPSGT credential for at least five years.

  • One member must be a physician who is the medical director of a sleep center.

  • One must be a physician who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

  • Two public members.

  • One appointed State executive department member.

Members will serve for a term of three years, except of the first six RPSGT members appointed, two will serve for three years, two will serve for two years and two will serve for one year.

The board is expected to organize itself as soon as at least a quorum of members is appointed, provided that at least a majority of the members appointed are polysomnographic technologists.

NJAST will provide the Governor with a pool of names of qualified technologists for the six RPSGT members, and may provide suggestions for the physician and medical director members.  NJAST members who meet the qualifications outlined above and who are interested in serving should forward a resume to the NJAST board.

Our staunch supporter, the Honorable Senator Robert Singer, strongly suggests that all polysomnographic technologists in New Jersey join NJAST.  NJAST will serve as a member organization for New Jersey sleep technologists and an advisory group to the new State Board of Polysomnography.  It is very important that NJAST be a strong organization representative of the sleep community in New Jersey!

RESCHEDULED!  RESCHEDULED!

All members are welcome to attend!
